As reported by Wireless Estimator,
Sentencing has finally been passed since the 500-foot FM tower has been collapsed back in January 2024.
Prosecutors say Candice Marie Logan and Matthew Carl Wilson cut a guy-wire at the KITX FM site near Hugo, Oklahoma, early on Jan. 16, 2024, toppling the top half of a 500-foot tower. They ripped out copper cabling, severed generator wiring, and even removed a utility meter—causing over $500,000 in damage. The stolen copper? Worth about $100, according to the station's owner.
The pair tried to sell the metal in Paris, Texas, and later pleaded guilty to transporting stolen goods across state lines—a federal offense carrying up to 10 years.
Despite the extensive destruction of the 50,000-watt facility, Logan received 8 months in prison; Wilson got 30. Both were sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
Restitution was ordered: Wilson owes $283,749, with $45,067 jointly owed with Logan, who must pay $250/month starting 60 days after release. Full repayment is unlikely.
The light sentences drew criticism from the broadcasting community and local officials. Choctaw County Sheriff Terry Park didn’t hold back: “We’ve got to go back to sending all these crackheads to prison for a long, long time. Bury these worthless thieves in prison.”
KITX owner Will Payne summed up the frustration: “We’re hunting down somebody that brought down a tower for a hundred-dollar fix. Let’s make them pay.”
